Bio

Walter M. Hanks, 72, of Onawa, Iowa, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2007, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa. Walter M. Hanks was born Nov. 9, 1934, at Ida Grove, Iowa, the son of Monroe and Rachel (Little) Hanks. Memorial services were 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 27, 2007, at Rush Family Chapel in Onawa, with Pastor Don Collison officiating. Burial was in Onawa, Iowa, Cemetery. He attended school at Ute, Iowa, and later was a farmhand in the Onawa area. Walter enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served six years. He married Linda Hawkins. He later married Kathryn Nelson on May 7, 1966, in Onawa. The couple made their home in Onawa. Walter was a welder for Westendorf Manufacturing Co. in Smithland, Iowa, and Onawa and a truck driver for Sioux City Foundry until his retirement in 1999. After his retirement, he enjoyed visiting with his many friends at "coffee times" at the Onawa cafes. Survivors include his wife, Kathryn of Onawa, Iowa; two sons, Marck of Chino Valley, Ariz. and Thomas of Sidney, Neb.; a daughter, Tammy of Aurora, Colo.; five brothers and their wives, James and Mary of Missouri Valley, Iowa; Wayne and Pat of Cherokee, Iowa; Earl and Dorothy of Quimby, Iowa, Gib and Darlene of Oregon City, Ore. and Jerry and Donna of Onawa, Iowa; three sisters, Dolsie Chasteen of Portland, Ore., Etta Chasteen of Hubbard, Ore. and Rose Chasteen of Oregon City, Ore.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Dale and Louis.
