Allen Washington Atwood served in the United States Army during World War I. He enlisted on May 27, 1918, and was initially assigned to Company K, 156th Infantry Regiment, part of the 39th Division, a Louisiana National Guard unit organized at Camp Beauregard. The 39th Division was later restructured into a depot division in France, where its troops were used to reinforce other combat divisions. Atwood was one of many soldiers reassigned to frontline units. By the end of his service, he was part of Company I, 114th Infantry Regiment, which belonged to the 29th Infantry Division. He returned to the United States aboard the U.S.S. Madawaska, departing St. Nazaire, France, on April 24, 1919, and was honorably discharged on May 22, 1919. His service number was 1,606,131. World War I ended with the signing of the Armistice on November 11, 1918, meaning that Atwood served during the final months of active combat and remained in service through the occupation and demobilization period that followed.
