ELWOOD — Donald John Foss, 90, of Elwood died Saturday, June 10, 2017, at the Elwood Care Center. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elwood with the Rev. Michael Wolff officiating. Burial, with military rites provided by the Elwood American Legion and the Nebraska Army National Guard, will be a Salem West Cemetery at Elwood. Elwood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He was born Feb. 13, 1927, to John Charles and Hilda (Pfeiffer) Foss on the family farm in Gosper County. He grew up on the farm and graduated from Elwood High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1955, and returned to Elwood. On Jan. 11, 1959, he married Norma Randolph at Salem Lutheran Church south of Elwood. Four children were born: Doug, Roger, Jennifer and an infant daughter who died at birth. They farmed for many years on the family farm, and he served as a Gosper County commissioner for several years. Don and Norma were faithful followers of Elwood High School athletics, receiving an award from the Elwood Booster Club for this honor. They followed their children and grandchildren for many years in all their activities. He was a member of the Elwood Lion’s Club, American Legion and the Salem Lutheran Church before transferring his membership to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. He enjoyed the neighborhood card club, dancing and was a founding member of the Udder Bunch. Survivors include his wife, Elwood; sons, Doug and wife Barb, Elwood, and Roger and wife Kelli, Wichita, Kan.; daughter Jennifer and husband Craig Ward, Elwood; sister Laurine Nitz, Coco, Fla.; eight grandchildren and six great grand-children. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Irene Weissert.
