Bio

Leonard Valentine Kraus was born on February 14, 1926 to Joseph J. and Christina (Bohuslav) Kraus on a farm 7 miles north of Crete in P Precinct of Seward County, Nebraska. He attended school in District 76 in Seward County and went to High School in Crete. In his Jr. year, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. It was World War II. He entered the Army in May of 1944. He served in the European and South Pacific theatres and was honorably discharged in May of 1946. In February of 1948, Leonard was baptized and confirmed at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Lincoln, Nebraska. On September 20th of 1947, he married Florence Priess in the Lutheran Church in Aurora, Nebraska. In December of 1949 they moved to a farm northwest of Seward, Nebraska. He operated an agricultural and dairy farm until January of 1963 when they moved to a farm 4 ½ miles southwest of Denton. He had a beef cow-calf farm. Leonard farmed for 40 years… In 1965, Leonard started working at the Crete Mills. In 1988 they moved to Crete and he retired from the mill after 27 years there. Leonard continued to do a lot of odd jobs for many people. He also worked for the City of Crete at the landfill for many years. He also bagged and carried groceries at Sun Mart in Crete and was a greeter at Walmart. Leonard loved to go fishing and work in his garden. He always raised lots of tomatoes. He was always ready for a card game with his grandsons. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, a lifetime member of the Lincoln American Legion #3, and member of the Crete VFW Post 4959. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Florence (Priess) Kraus; children Kevin (Claudia) Kraus, Launa (Ken) McMillan, Jahnee' (Dave) Ladman; 10 grandchildren and spouses; 16 great-grandchildren; siblings, Alma Strain, Alvin Kraus, Irene Boshart, and Mabel Sysel; sister-in-law, Laura Daehling. Preceding him in death is his son, Kent Kraus; brothers, Richard, Bernard, Robert and his parents. A Memorial Service will be 2:30 PM on Monday, June 12, 2017 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Crete with Pastor Ron Benson officiating. Visitation with family greeting friends on Sunday from 4-6 PM at Kuncl Funeral Home in Crete. Private interment will take place at Lincoln Memorial Park.
