Bio

Viola Shipman August 29, 1915 - May 28, 2017 Salem - Viola "Skinny" Simpson Shipman, 101, passed away peacefully Sunday, May 28, 2017 in Stayton, Oregon. She was born in Monroe, Nebraska where she graduated from Burwell High School in 1932. She started teaching in country schools at 17 and continued until 1943. She could remember all of her students' names until the day she passed. In 1944, she married the love of her life, Bill, who she met while working at a Post Exchange in Camp Carson, Colorado. At the end of the WWII, they moved back to Bill's home state of Oregon, and settled in the Macleay area of Salem, where she resided until the end. During her time in Oregon, she worked as bookkeeper for the TB Hospital (now Corban University) and as a bookkeeper for Boltman's Nursery/Triple Tree in Keizer. Viola was preceded in death by her husband, Willis "Big Bill" Shipman; and her parents: Raymond "Dutch" and Freda Simpson. She is survived by her children: Willis "Bill" (Sharon) Shipman and Dyann Shipman Maulding; three grandchildren: Stacy (Candie) Shipman, Sarah Maulding (Greg) Tutor and Matthew Maulding; and five great-grandchildren: Faith (Jonny) Lee, Jordyn Tutor, Abbi, Micaela and Cayden Shipman. She enjoyed writing, camping, fishing, and cards (especially Texas Hold'em), but loved people and their stories most of all. Her life was filled with love and laughter and she will be missed. Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 3rd from 9am-12pm with Funeral Services following at 1:00pm at Howell-Edwards-Doerksen with Rigdon-Ransom Funeral Directors. A committal service will be at 3:00 pm at Stipp Cemetery. Published in StatesmanJournal on June 1, 2017
