Monty R. Kyhn, 80, of Grand Island died on Thursday, May 25, 2017, with his family at his side. Memorial service and celebration of Monty’s life will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at All Faiths Funeral Home. Burial of ashes will be in Grand Island City Cemetery with military honors provided by the United States Army and the Grand Island Veterans’ Honor Guard. Monty was born January 2, 1937 in Cotesfield to Walter and Ruby (Gardner) Kyhn. He grew up in Cotesfield and graduated from Scotia High School, class of 1954. He was united in marriage to Kathryn Szwanek June 16, 1956. Following their marriage, the couple made their home and raised their family in Grand Island. He was a mason and bricklayer by trade. On October 13, 1960, Monty entered the United States Army, spending time in Germany, and was honorably discharged October 9, 1962. He was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church. Monty enjoyed playing golf with the “Senior League” at Indianhead Golf Club, Nascar and Sprint car racing. He was also a fan of Polka music, especially the Chelewski Brothers. A wonderful husband, father and grandfather, Monty was proud of his family, especially his granddaughters. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 60 years, Kathryn; children, Lori (Dave) Medlin of Grand Island and Andy (Niki) Kyhn of Omaha; three beloved granddaughters, Kirsten and Alyssa Medlin and Avery Kyhn; brother and sister-in-law, Gordon and Nanci Kyhn of Martell, NE and sister-in-law, Kathy Kyhn of Grand Island; and two wonderful friends, George Medberry and Mel Schmit. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Gilbert Kyhn.
