Son of Stephen Delasandra Wheat and Rodann 'Rhoda' Higginbotham. Stephen D. Wheat 21 born Georgia appears on the 1850 census, Sulphur Spring, Montgomery, Arkansas with Elizabeth F. Wheat 60 and Frances J. A. Wheat 21. both born Georgia. S.D. Wheat and A.W. Wheat a lawyer paid property taxes on many acres of land in Campbell, Appling, Lowndes, Cherokee, Gilmer, Polk and Baker Counties, Georgia in 1855 - 1857, almost 3000 acres at $10,000. value. A. W. Wheat 43 a farmer appears on 1864 census, Campbell, Georgia for re-organizing the Georgia Militia. Augustus Walter 'Gus' Wheat may be Stephen's brother. Son of Wesley Wheat and Frances Walton. (Was his middle name Walton?) Known as the one-eyed merchant of Marthasville GA which became Atlanta in 1845. S.D. Wheat 36 a teacher is listed on 1860 census, Randolph County, Alabama, residing with R.W. ( Robert W. Jackson ) and Mary H. Jackson family, all born Georgia. ∼ His father Stephen/S.D. Wheat served in Civil War, Confederate, Private, Company K, 24th Regiment, Alabama Infantry. He enlisted Aug 13 1861, Camp Barkley, Talladega, Alabama by Capt. B. F. Sawyer. He was on the muster rolls April 2, 1864, Dalton GA. Granted 30 days furlough due to gun shot wound of upper third of left thigh, disability certificate July 28, 1864, Quintard Hospital, Griffin, GA. One soldier record indicates a D.S. Wheat, Corp. killed at Bentonville NC. He was paroled in Greensboro, North Carolina in May of 1865. Record indicates Co. C. He was commissioned Justice of Peace in Cleburne county, GA, Dec 12, 1868 and record indicates deceased. ∼ Augustus Wheat 2 is listed on the 1870 census, Cleburne, Alabama, with his mother Roda A Wheat 26 in household of her widowed father Nelson Higginbotham 68 born Georgia and siblings Octavia 4, Lafayette16 , Clay14 and July A 12. They reside adjacent to a J. and Martta Higginbotham family. Roda's mother Lucretia Beard had died in 1868. Her parents are buried in Chulafinnee Cemetery, Cleburne, Alabama. Widowed, his mother married James C. Runnels, February 16, 1875 Cleburne County, Alabama. Gus appears on the 1880 census, Smith County Texas with his mother 34 and his step father James Runnels 34 a farmer, and his sister Octavia Wheat 12. There is a marriage record for A. G. Wheat to Martha Sawyer, September 3, 1893, Grayson, Texas. On the 1900 census, Augustus, widow, is residing in Chicksaw Nation, Indian Territory,(Oklahoma) where he is a farmer, with his single sister Octavia 33 and his daughter Lottie W 3 born Texas. Also a boarder Lee Runnels 18 born Texas, a farm laborer. (Lee Runnels married Myrtle Scott in 1904 Carter, Oklahoma (Indian Territory)) His mother is listed on the 1910 and 1920 census Marshall County, Oklahoma with husband James C. Runnels born Georgia, though 1900 census indicates he was born Texas. This record indicates his mother had 8 children, 5 living. A. G. and Mila Akin married September 2, 1900, Carter, Oklahoma. She is listed on 1910 census, Willis, Marshall, Oklahoma as widowed however Augustus was living elsewhere. This record indicates she had 5 children, 4 living. Listed are Liddie O 7, Leora 6, Gaines D4 and David G 2. By the 1920 census, Augustus and Milie Ann are living in Willis, Marshall, Oklahoma, with daughter Lee 16, sons Gaines Decatur 14 and David Gilbert 12, all born Oklahoma. The 1930 census finds them living in Kern, California, with sons Gaines and Gilbert. This record indicates he was age 23 at first marriage and Milie was 18.
