Obituary: Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley, AL SARAH RUTH DAWSON OTTO 9 Oct 1924 – 13 May 2017 Mrs. Sarah Ruth Dawson Otto, 92, of LaGrange, GA, formerly of Valley, AL passed away on Saturday, 13 May 2017 at the West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange. Sarah Ruth Dawson Otto, most affectionately known as “Miss Ruth” and referred to as “The Southern Bell” who married a “Soldier and a Damn Yankee” was reunited with her late husband Dr. Charles Otto. They had been married for a little over 72 years and were separated only by death for a short three months. Miss Ruth grew up in the Beehive Community in Loachapoka along with her eight siblings. She attended Loachapoka Elementary and graduated from Auburn High School. At 17 years old she was named Miss Loachapoka. She later served as a volunteer for the USO, going to social events to boost the morale of soldiers. It was here that she met Charles Stanley Otto, Jr, who would later become her husband and father of their five children. Miss Ruth attended Auburn University and earned her Business degree from Massey Draughon Business College. After her marriage she joined her husband in his Veterinary Practice for over 44 years. She was a member of Langdale United Methodist Church where she served in many areas of service to her church and community. While her boys were young she was the “Den Mother” to Cub Scout Pack 9. She was a member of the Ominis Club, the Garden Club, served several appointments as president of The West Point Pilot Club, actively involved with Hike Bike Run, earned her recognition as a 20 plus gallon blood donor to the American Red Cross, active member of the Lee County Historical Society and avid supporter of the H. Grady Bradshaw Library. She along with Dr. Otto was honored as Hospice Volunteers of the Year, actively involved with the City of Valley Historical Preservation Commission, the Chambers County Historical Society, honored with a proclamation from the Alabama State Legislature with a “Chuck and Ruth Otto Day” and honored for multiple other community service recognitions throughout their years. One of her favorite activities was “Dancing with the Old Folks” with her friend Lillian Wilson at the local nursing homes. Miss Ruth and Dr. Otto raised their family in the Langdale community and their doors were always open to friends and family. A graceful lady who always had a smile on her face, never met a stranger and everywhere she went she was a positive influence to others. She was an avid gardener, loved to read and spend time with her family. She was mom, she was grand mommy and she was the matriarch of the family. She filled her life with joy and love and graced the lives of those around her. She was known to be forever young and when asked what her secret was for staying young her reply was simply, “Be Happy and Help People”. She is survived by her children, Charles S. (Linda) Otto, III, Bill (Cathy) Otto, John (Carla) Otto, Marilyn (Drew) Russell; daughter-in-law, Vickie Otto; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; siblings, Leona Fincher, Jackie Graves.
