One of nine children, she was born in 1922 and raised on a hundred-acre farm near Beehive, Alabama. As a child, she worked in the cotton fields, tended to farm animals, and learned to make her own clothing. Emmagene graduated from Auburn University and was working in Montgomery, Alabama, when she was introduced to Lt. John Belknap by a friend who was dating her sister Ruth. John and Gene, as she became known, married soon before John was shipped off to the Pacific in World War II. After the war, they moved to Ann Arbor where Gene worked as a dietitian while John finished his degree at the University of Michigan. Then the couple moved back to the family home in Port Clinton where John joined his father Harry in the insurance business and Gene became a mother and homemaker-a career which can be fully appreciated only by her children to whom she devoted her life. Gene and John enjoyed a good retirement together filled with travel and sailing. After John died in 1997, Emmagene carried on another thirteen years in the family home on Perry Street with her typical energy and enthusiasm despite several heart attacks. She was the last representative of five generations of Hollinsheads, Magruders, and Belknaps to live in Port Clinton since its founding. The house will remain in the family for the sixth, seventh, and future generations. Emmagene Dawson Belknap is survived by her sisters, Ruth Otto, Leona Fincher, and Jackie Graves; her children, Paul, Ty, Sally, and Mark; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. As a longtime member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Magruder Hospital Auxilliary, P.E.O., and the Port Clinton Yacht Club, Emmagene loved her town and her many friends. The family plans a memorial gathering in Port Clinton, scheduled for Saturday, June 11, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church.
