John George Matous, 79, passed away on Wednesday, April 19, 2017, in Rice, Texas. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday, April 23, 2017, in the J.E. Keever Mortuary of Ennis with Rosary at 5 p.m. Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Monday, April 24, 2017, in St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church with Father John Dick as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. John was born in Ennis, Texas, to the late Jerry and Frances, (Vlk) Matous, Sr. He grew up in Ennis and graduated from St John High School in 1956. On November 22, 1961, he married Jeanette Reznicek and they made their home originally in Virginia Beach, VA, then to Forney, Texas, and settled in Rice for the last 48 years. He served his country proudly in the United States Army. John was self-employed as a carpenter with his brothers for many years and was the co-owner and operator of Ennis-U-Rent businesses in Ennis and Corsicana. He also worked farming and ranching. He was a member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, KJT, and WFLA. He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, working in his vegetable garden and raising doves. John had many interests and enjoyed many things but his family and especially his grandchildren were the joy of his life. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette Matous, on February 9, 2015. Survivors include his sons, John M. Matous and wife, Janet, and Jason Matous and wife, Sharon; daughters, Julie Moore and husband, James, and Jennifer VanZuuk; grandchildren: Lane Matous, Dylan Moore, Hayley VanZuuk, Riley Moore, Trey VanZuuk, and Matt Matous; great-grandchild, Jett Brown; brothers: Jerry Matous, George Matous, Joe Matous, Walter Matous, and Bobby Matous; sisters: Frances Novotny, Helen Barak, JoAnn Baw, and Peggy Marroquin; along with a multitude of extended family and friends.
