Services for J.C. "Shorty" Crist, 77, of Emerald Bay (Bullard) will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home Chapel in Palestine. Burial will follow at Land of Memory Cemetery. Mr. Crist died Saturday at Methodist Hospital in Houston. He was born Jan. 10, 1930, in Cross Roads to the late Nellie Mooney Crist and Stevie Houston Crist. He was reared in Cross Roads and graduated from Cross Roads High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict. He attended the University of Texas. Mr. Crist worked in the oil industry in South America, Asia, the Middle East and Great Britain and later operated his own consulting firm in Texas. He was a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church and was a Shriner. He was preceded in death by his brothers, W.M. Crist and Lawrence L. Crist; and by his sister, Alice Crist Gurganus. Mr. Crist is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sue Crist of Emerald Bay; daughters, Loyie Winkel and husband Tony and Joyie Herrington and husband Jeff; grandchildren, Stephen and Jordan Winkel and Savannah Herrington; and sisters, Dulas Welch of Athens and Bulah Dale Vighe of Fort Worth. Pallbearers are Jordan Winkel, Chip Crist, Roger Wright, Bobby Moser, Charles Cutler and Luther Peterson. Condolence calls will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home.
