Bio

Lewis Blatny, 30, of Waterloo, Nebraska, brother of Edward Blatny of Schuyler, Charles Blatny of Richland, Nebraska and Anton and Joseph Blatny of Linwood, Nebraska, was fatally injured about 4:30 last Thursday afternoon when struck by a truck driven by Joseph Wilcoxen of Omaha, country route salesman for the P.F. Petersen Baking company. Blatny was a highway worker and the accident occurred on Highway 6, two and a half miles north of Gretna, Nebraska. Mr. Blatny was given first aid by a Gretna doctor and then taken to St. Joseph's hospital in Omaha, Nebraska where he died from his injuries. Wilcoxen told officials he had gone to sleep at the wheel of his truck for the moment. He stated he had been on duty since 2:45 last Thursday morning. The accident occurred about 14 hours later. Wilcoxen said he had retired the night before between 9 and 9:30 and that he had slept two hours in Lincoln before starting on his return trip to Omaha. He was returning to Omaha at the time of the accident. Wilcoxen's truck rolled 900 feet down a hill and crashed through a road barricade and a sand pile before striking Mr. Blatny who was assisting in preparing a part of the road for paving. After hitting Mr. Blatny, the truck crashed through another barricade on the north side of the project and careened into a ditch on the left side of the road. Officials stated proper warning signs were placed on either side of the project where the men were at work. A manslaughter charge was filed against Wilcoxen in Sarpy county court Friday. When arraigned he pleaded innocence. His preliminary hearing was held Tuesday morning. Mr. Blatny was born at Linwood where the greater part of his life was spent. He and Miss Margaret Frampton were married at Papillion about eight months ago. The widow, Margaret, six brothers, Frank, of Hot Springs, S.D., Anton and Joseph, both of Linwood, Edward of Schuyler, Charles of Richmond, and Jacob of Omaha, survive. Funeral services were held at the Waterloo Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon. Burial took place in Prospect Hill cemetery near Waterloo. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From obituary printed in the Thursday, August 28, 1941 Schuyler Sun, Schuyler, Nebraska; kind assistance of FindaGrave volunteer Rhonda Wiebe 50438354 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
