Bio
Doris M. Pokorney, 91, of Grand Island died Sunday, April 2, 2017, at Grand Island Park Place Care and Rehabilitation Center, surrounded by her loving family. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. The Rev. Dr. Robert M. Lewis will officiate. Interment will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time at the church. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family. Doris was born March 29, 1926, in Callaway. She is the daughter of Ted and Ruby (Lyons) Shupp. Survivors of her immediate family include her daughters, Nancy Nelson of Papillion, Polly (Brad) Brooks of Norfolk; two grandsons and their spouses, Todd (Lacey) Brooks of Norfolk, Troy (Kristi) Brooks of Battle Creek; and three stepgreat-grandchildren, Kailey, Caden and DeLaney Meinke Doris grew up and received her education in Grand Island, attending Grand Island Senior High School. She was employed at Bell Telephone Company for several years. She was united in marriage to Rudy M. Pokorney on April 30, 1949, at Grand Island. They lived in Grand Island where Doris worked for the Ordnance Plant for several years before joining Lingerman Trophy, retiring in 1984 after 12 years of service. Rudy died Sept. 2, 2010. Doris relished spending time with her children and grandsons, and loved cooking for her family. She was an avid reader and enjoyed bowling and sewing. She was a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church and past member of St. Martha’s Guild. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Rudy; and a son, Billy.
