Bio

LaVern Robert Kowalski, 73, of Grand Island, formerly of Ord, passed away Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at CHI Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. A Celebration of Life will be 11 a.m. Monday at Ord Memorial Chapel. Inurnment will be in the Greeley Cemetery at a later date. LaVern Robert was born July 3, 1943, at Greeley to Roman and Margaret (Czarnik) Kowalski. During his high school years, he worked at Safeway in Ord and graduated from Ord High School in 1962. On Dec. 28, 1964, LaVern was united in marriage to Norma Jensen at Vermillion, S.D. Following high school, LaVern worked at Wheelers and then moved to Lexington, where he was the manager of Wheelers for many years. While living in Ravenna, LaVern and Norma owned and operated Mr. Automotive and returned to Ord in 1979. LaVern and Norma raised their family of four in Ord and LaVern worked in construction. In 1998, they settled in Grand Island and LaVern worked for Lacy Construction until his retirement. In his younger days LaVern enjoyed hunting. He was very good at woodworking, and kept a meticulous lawn and garden. He was passionate about his vehicles and was insistent on buying new trucks frequently. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Norma of Grand Island; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Tom and Ladene of Ord and Jeff of Elyria and his significant other, Cindy Grooms of York; a sister and brother-in-law, Michelle and Ted Nelson of Ord; eight grandchildren, Shelby and Jacob Kowalski, Tyler Arends, Connor Kowalski, Alexis, Daniel and LaRaya Nelson and Tristin Kowalski; one great-grandson, Hunter Kowalski; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruth and Elliott Sagehorn of Ogallala and Maxine and Jon Peters of Brewster; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Dwayne and Monica Schamp of Ord, Leonard and Barb Schamp of Alda and Frank and Barb Schamp of Washington; many nieces, nephews; and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Troy Kowalski; stepfather, Alvin Schamp; a brother, Bill Schamp and a sister, Julie Owens.
