Bio

Evelyn Marie (Bartos) Cook passed away Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell, from a rapidly growing cancer. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Mira Valley Evangelical United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dr. Jeff D. Hale will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Evelyn was born Dec. 30, 1930, to Joseph Gus and Louise (Zurek) Bartos. She was raised on the family farm east of Burwell, the third out of seven children. She attended rural schools in Garfield County, including the McIntyre and Midvale Schools. The family moved to Burwell, where Evelyn received her high school diploma graduating on May 17, 1949. Evelyn married Wilfred (Bill) Cook on Aug. 15, 1952, in Burwell. Bill was stationed with the U.S. Marines at Oceanside, Calif., where they spent the first year of their married life together. In 1953, the couple moved back to the Cook farm south of Ord to a farming community called Mira Valley. After marriage, and when her children were older, she was employed by the county superintendent of rural schools in Valley County, and later worked many years for PCA and Federal Land Bank as secretary. Her hobbies included gardening, giving her vegetable harvest away to friends and family, and grooming her yard into one of the prettiest places in the area. She loved her family and enjoyed hosting her family for gatherings, and attending her grandchildren’s events. She was preceded in death by baby brother; sisters, Rose Ella Sevenker, Agnes Bernice Foster; brothers, Jerald Leo Bartos and LeRoy Joseph Bartos. She is survived by husband, Wilfred (Bill) Cook; sister, Sharlene Louise Wozniak; sister-in-law, Judy Bartos; brother-in-law, Lyle Sevenker; brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Marilyn (Cook) Stuber; sister-in-law, Roberta (Cook) Stewart; son, Robert (Bob) Cook and wife, Donna; daughter, Debra Sitz and husband, Mike; grandchildren, Jesse and Victoria Sitz, Bethany (Sitz) and Joel Johnston, Johanna (Sitz) and Brett Spencer, Ransom and Rachael Sitz; and great-grandchildren, John Sitz, Lena Spencer, Jordee Johnston and Brady Spencer.
