Bio

Leo F. Janda, 92, of La Grange, Texas, passed away Thursday, March 16, 2017 in Houston, Texas. Leo was born in Hostyn, Texas on June 9, 1924, the son of Cyril M. "C. M." and Bessie (Kallus) Janda. He graduated from LaGrange High School in 1942 and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Army serving in the South Pacific during World War II. Leo married Willie Mae Bartos on June 23, 1948 in Ammannsville, Texas. He worked 38 years as a Truck Driver/Salesman for Steinmann Beer Distributing Company in La Grange. Leo was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in La Grange. He was very active in the community giving of his time especially to the KJT, Sacred Heart Holy Name Society, VFW Post #5254 and American Legion Post #102. Leo is survived by one daughter, Connie Smith and her husband Brian of Brenham, Texas; one son, Chris Janda and his wife Elizabeth of Houston, Texas; two sisters: Delores Prilop of Angleton, Texas and Victoria Kolaja of Houston, Texas; one brother, Vit Janda and his wife Gertrude of Bellville, Texas; one brother-in-law, Leonard Bartos and his wife, Dorothy, of Weimar, Texas; four grandchildren: Justin Smith; Brian Smith, Jr. and his wife, Debbie; Stephen Janda and Alexa Janda; and one great grandson, Ethan Smith. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Leo was preceded in death by his parents; wife Willie Mae; son-in-law Gary Gummelt; two brothers: George and Ben Janda; four sisters: Beatrice Kubasek, Frances Rainosek, Mary Lidiak and Ann Wessels; his mother and father-in-law, Vlasta and Justin Bartos; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Justin Bartos, Jr. and his wife, Laura. Visitation will be held at Koenig & Strickland Funeral Home. Family will receive friends and a rosary will be recited. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 539 E. Pearl St., La Grange, Texas with Rev. Fr. Matthew Kinney officiating. Burial will follow in the Hostyn Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers will include his nephews, Max Lidiak, Eric Janda, John David Janda, Justin Bartos III, Randy Bartos, Joe Wessels, and Daniel Cernoch. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the KJT, P. O. Box 297, La Grange, TX 78945; Sacred Heart Catholic Church, P. O.
