Bio

SHINER: Ben J. Matula, 89, passed away Wednesday, February 22, 2017. Ben was born February 8, 1928 in Shiner to John A. and Christina Caka Matula. On April 6, 1948, he married Helen Marie Patek. To this union were born 13 children, 9 daughters and 4 sons. Ben was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen; daughter, Bonnie Sralla; sons-in-law, Roger Sralla and Jimmy Henrichs; granddaughter, Ashley Slonina; brother, John F. Matula; sister, Irene Botard Henrichs; special friend, Catherine Wilems. Ben was a Mobil Oil consignee for over 30 years, an avid fisherman, hunter, cattleman and gardener all of his life. Grandpa was known as a great story teller of his fishing and hunting adventures who "embellished" the yellow cats he caught and the deer he killed. One of his greatest treasures, beyond his family, was his farm on Rocky Creek where many of his grandchildren listened to his amazing stories. Ben's fraternal affiliations included KJT, Shiner Business Men's Club, Young Farmers and 621st Mess Kit Repair. Ben also believed he was a good domino player. Rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, February 24, 2017 at Thiele-Cooper Funeral Home in Yoakum. Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church with Rev. Bryan Heyer officiating. Burial at Shiner Catholic Cemetery. Published by the Victoria Advocate, February 24, 2017
