Services for Buster Hatch, 85, lifelong resident and well known businessman in Port.ales, will be 2 P.M. Friday, Jan. 26, 2007, at St. Helen Catholic Church with Father James McGowan, Celebrant. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Jim Warnica, Doug Maurer, Bill DeLaCerda, Sundown Means, Sean Tanner, James Hatch and Melvin Littlejohn as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be all of his many friends and family members as well as the members of Portales Lion's Club. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice. Buster was born Feb. 22, 1921, in Tulia, Texas, to the home of Eunice and Jim Hatch, and passed away early Monday morning, Jan. 22, 2007, in Santa Fe, where he had recently moved to be near his daughter, Carol. The Hatch family came to Portales when Buster was only a few months old. He graduated from Portales High School in 1939. He worked with his father for a short time at the family business, Hatch Packing Co., before joining the U.S. Coast Guard to serve during World War II. While on leave on New Years Eve 1943, he met his future bride, Geraldine Gotthardt, on Time Square in New York City. The couple was married Aug. 8, 1945, shortly after his discharge. They came to Portales on their honeymoon and returned to Portales to make their home. Buster returned to the packing company where he worked until 1969 when he and his wife, Gerry opened Gerry's Gift Box on the square in Portales. They sold the store in 1985 when his wife became ill. Buster was a lifetime member of the Portales Lion's Club where he remained active until only a few months ago. He also was a member of the Portales Country Club and an avid golfer. He and Gerry enjoyed traveling and making fishing trips with their many friends. He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Carol Ann (Hatch) Thompson, of Santa Fe and Glennis and Doug Maurer, of Denver, Colo.; four grandchildren, Shelly Means and husband, Sundown, Sean Tanner and wife, Kerry, Tara DeLaCerda and husband, Bill and Allyson Maurer; five great-grandchildren, Dayton and Jaedyn DeLaCerda, Jake and Taylor Means and Annabelle Tanner; two brothers, Norman "Buck" Hatch, of Oak Park, Calif. and Gordon Hatch, of Portales; as well as other family members. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Betty Jim Brown; and by his wife, Gerry who died July 30, 2002. Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales, (505) 356-4455.
