William Ray Shaw VETERAN | UTAH NATIONAL GUARD 1933 - 2017 Early Life: Billy Ray was born October 15, 1933, in Logansport, Indiana, to Herbert W. Farrer and Mabel Iola Shaw. Life's Work/Service/Interests: He met Rhea Ashton at a dance at Saratoga and they were married September 19, 1952, in Lehi, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Provo Utah LDS Temple on September 22, 1973. Together, they raised six children in Lehi. Rhea preceded him in death in 2009. Bill served in the Utah National Guard for eight years, earning the rank of Sergeant. He worked as a cement mason for many years and was a member of the Utah Carpenters' and Cement Masons' Union. He then worked for US Steel (Geneva), where he retired after 28 years of service. He was a member of the local Steel Workers Union while there. Bill is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many capacities in the Boy Scout program, in Lehi, throughout the years. His sons each attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He was the first person to receive the John Hutchings Award for Scouting Excellence. He was awarded the Silver Beaver award in 1988. He loved collecting Scout memorabilia for nearly 50 years. William “Billy Ray” Shaw, a long-time resident of Lehi and American Fork, passed away January 3, 2017, in Riverton, Utah. Family Message: "The family wishes to thank the countless people who have provided friendship to our father over the years, including Tom Reay and Toni Doyle. The American Fork 1st Ward Relief Society has provided years of appreciated compassionate service. Also thanks to the staff of the RICU at Intermountain Medical Center, The Lodge at Riverton. Cozy Homecare & Hospice, as well as the Copperview 10th Branch." Survived By: His children: David (Mary) Shaw, Sharon (Mark) Frei, Kenneth (Holly) Shaw, Janet, Craig, and Phyllis (Michael) Bohling; grandchildren: Ryan Frei, Rashell Frei, Jennifer (Andrew) Chris, Kelsey Bohling, Ashlie (Nick) Parkinson, and Emilee Bohling; great-grandchildren: Mason and Micah Chris; his sister, Jeanne (Jim) Sisson; and brother-in-law, Bruce (Helen) Ashton. Preceded In Death By: His wife, his mother, a stillborn son, a grandson, Michael Shaw; a brother, Larry Minneman; and extended family members.
