Legacy.com "Charlotte "Chotzie" Meyers Benz passed quietly on Tuesday, June 28, 2016, in San Rafael, Calif., where she was living under the watchful eye of her nearby children. She lived a life full of her loves: her husband of 60 years, Ralph Arthur Benz, deceased Sept. 14, 2005; two daughters, Meredith and Susan; three sons, John, Charles and Fred; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; countless friends; and nine beloved dogs. For those who knew her and loved her, the world became a little less bright, a little less compassionate and whole lot less fun with her passing. Charlotte was born Feb. 23, 1924, in Chicago, Ill., to Fred and Ruth Meyers. She had two wonderful brothers, Bill and Jack, and is survived by her youngest brother, Jack Meyers. Simply put, Charlotte was a wonderfully warm human being who approached life with style, charm, grace, compassion and a wry sense of humor. Growing up on the North Shore of Chicago and northern Indiana during the '20s and '30s, Charlotte developed an ineffable ability to observe and find the best in others and to build lasting friendships. With Charlotte, once a friend, always a friend and she is remembered with great love by those who shared her friendship along the way from New Trier High School, to the University of Arizona, to Michigan City, Cleveland, Sewickley and Tucson. Charlotte's other devotions throughout her life included golf, dancing, afternoon naps and her evening cocktail. With children grown, Charlotte (with Ralph) also enjoyed a love of international travel with numerous trips around the globe. Last but not least, Charlotte was also an active member of the communities in which she lived, volunteering throughout her life for various organizations, culminating with her work in Tucson as a teacher's aide, where she took great satisfaction helping elementary school children develop their reading skills. As with any individual whose life spans nine decades there is no way to adequately sum up all that Charlotte was and all that Charlotte meant to her family and friends. For those lucky enough to have known her there was no one more genuine, loving, open, honest, generous or more fun than "Chotzie" Benz. The Benz family has lost our matriarch but the sun is shining and tomorrow will be another day made stronger by her legacy and influence on our lives. Heaven is lucky to have her. Donations may be made to the Cure Alzheimer's Fund (www.curealz.org) in her name. If you would like to reach out to the family, please contact her daughter, Meredith, by email at [email protected] or by regular mail at 41 Vine Ave., Point Richmond, CA 94801.
