In 1956, the family moved to Esbon where Gary graduated from the Esbon High School with the class of 1960. Following his desire to serve his country, he enlisted in the United States Air Force for a four year tour of duty and was discharged in 1964. He returned to the farm at Esbon to pursue his life's work as a farmer and stockman. He was a proud steward of the land and a progressive cattleman. He was presented the Soil Conservation Award for his efforts. Gary was involved in numerous community and civic organizations including the Esbon American Legion Post where he served as Post Commander for many years.
