Bio

Arnold A. Tuma, 87, of Schuyler, died Tuesday, May 12, 2015, at Golden LivingCenter in Columbus. A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 15, at Divine Mercy Parish, St. Augustine Catholic Church in Schuyler with the Rev. Carl Zoucha officiating. Committal will be in Schuyler Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday with a 7 p.m. Knights and parish rosary and 8:30-10 a.m. Friday, all at Kracl Funeral Chapel in Schuyler. Arnold A. Tuma was born July 8, 1927, in Colfax County to Lumir and Anna (Jedlicka) Tuma. He attended District #64 and graduated from Schuyler High School in 1944. He then took several welding classes and, in 1946, was drafted into the United States Army, serving for two years at Fort Lewis, Washington. Following the service, he married his best friend, Loretta Shonka, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Schuyler. They farmed the family farm northwest of Schuyler and, in 2012, they received the Aksarben Pioneer Family Award for the farm being in the same family for over 100 years. Arnold loved farming and polka music, as well as traveling. They took a family vacation nearly every year. Arnold was a member of St. Augustine's Catholic Church, life member of Catholic Workmen Branch 40, life member of the Knights of Columbus, served on several school boards and the Wilson Cemetery Board, was a charter member of Schuyler Coop and served several terms on the board of directors. He was also a member of the American Legion and VFW in Schuyler. He is survived by three daughters, Theresa (Dave) Wemhoff of Monroe and Jayne (Greg) Bronzynski and Holly (Mike) Wetjen, all of Norfolk; two sons, Allen (Pegge) Tuma of Columbus and Myron (Connie) Tuma of Schuyler; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Gladys Vavricek of Schuyler; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim and Marion Flynn of Lawrence, Kansas, and Joe and Jan Connelly of Denver; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Loretta in 2012; son, Mark Tuma in 1981; brothers-in-law, Lambert and Morris Vavricek; and Loretta's sister and her husband, Angie and Hilarion Kruger.
