James Arthur Williams, 86, died at home Monday, July 28, 1997. Mr. Williams worked for Stevenson Co-Ply for almost 20 years before an accident forced him to retire in 1968. He was born Aug. 8, 1910, in Junction City, Ark., and moved to the area in the early 1950s. He liked to read the Bible and Western novels. Mr. Williams raised horses and was still breaking horses earlier this year. He also made harnesses and other leather tack items. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy M. Williams in 1994, and a son, Billy G. in 1977. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Sula, at home; three daughters, JoAnn Fritz of Skamania, Betty Raley of New Castle, Calif., and Judy Fremouw of Washougal; one son, William "Bud" of Colton, Ore.; one brother, Melvin of Louisiana; 17 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Wind River Memorial Cemetery in Carson. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Southwest, in care of Gardner Funeral Home in White Salmon.
