Bio

Major William Russell was a veteran of the War of 1812. He volunteered three times and served in Captain Cowan’s Company in the regiment commanded by Colonel William Pillow. Minta Fowler, wife of William Russell, recorded their marriage date and her maiden name in her War of 1812 Bounty Land Warrant Application as April 13, 1815, Franklin Co, TN ( the only place where their marriage is recorded and where her maiden name is given). Major William Russell and many of his children moved from Franklin Co, TN to Franklin Co,AL after the War of 1812. Nephew William Russell also moved there. While his two oldest daughters were born in Tennessee, his next two children, sons, were born in Alabama after 1820. William Russell, Jr. the fourth child of William and Minta, was born January 22, 1824, in Alabama and died June 20, 1894, in Farmersville, TX . On August 26, 1848, in Winchester, Franklin County, Tennesee, he married Mary Ann Taylor (Frankilin county, Tennessee Marriage Book, 1835-1875, p. 102) William married Minta Fowler in Winchester, Franklin Co, TN on April 13, 1815. Edited transcription of Minta's summary of William's service. July AD 1853, - Minta Russel aged 55 years widow of William Russel deceased. Company commanded by Captain George Caperton, in the second regiment of Tennessee volunteers commanded by Colonel Wm. Pillow, commanded by Major General Andrew Jackson in the war with the Creek Indians, known as the war of 1812. That her husband volunteered and enrolled himself as a volunteer at Winchester in Franklin county state of Tennessee on or about the 10th of December 1812, the 26th of September [1812], the 10th of December AD 1812 to the 20th of April 1813 and continued in actual service for the term of four months and fourteen days and was honorably discharged at Nashville in the state of Tennessee about the 20th of April 1813, etc. 26th day of September AD 1813. Actual service in said war for the term of two months and fourteen days - discharged on or about the 10th of December AD 1813. And the said Minty Russel widow as aforesaid further sayeth that her said Husband enrolled himself as a volunteer at Winchester in the state of Tennessee as Orderly Sergeant in the month of September 1814 - six months - discharged on or about the February AD 1815. She further states that she was married to the said William Russell in Franklin County on the 13th day of April 1815 by one John Caperton a Justice of the Peace. Her name was Minty Fowler. William died on the August 9, 1841.
