Bio

Mary was the daughter of James Mitchell. I believe her mother's name to be Catherine Jane Young. I found a marriage date of 22 Jan 1846 for them. A Mitchell family appears on the 1860 Census, living in Jefferson Township, Kosciusko Co., Indiana, with a daughter named Mary E (for Elizabeth) with a father named James and a mother named Catherine. The parents and all but one of the six children were born in Ohio and on the death record for the youngest child on the record, Francis Marion Mitchell, his parents are listed as James Mitchell and Catherine Young. The family was still in the same place when the 1870 Census was enumerated. Besides head of household James Mitchell and wife Jane, there were eight children, Mary, aged 17, among them. Three years after that census, Mary married Simon Hall two weeks before Christmas on 12 Dec 1873. The couple had ten children together (according to Mary on the 1900 Census). I found the names for eight—Perry Orielle (28 Jan 1876), Cora Ellen (2 Sep 1877), (possibly) Maria H. (circa Jan 1880) (appears on 1880 Census but is so faint that I am not positive), Rilla Jane (9 Jul 1883), Omer S. (17 Aug 1885), John Taylor (18 Nov 1886), Iva G. (1 Dec 1889), and Orange Vernon (4 Mar 1892). The 1880 Census record on which the family was enumerated is horribly faded. The transcribed record only shows Simon Hull (sic), aged 29 and farming, and wife Mary, aged 27, but on the original record, there are three children listed after them—Perry, aged 4, Cora, aged 3, and Maria, aged 5 months. On 3 Apr 1895, Simon and Mary's daughter Cora married Milton Kilian in Kosciusko County. I found the family on the 1900 Census living in Etna Green in Kosciusko County. Simon, aged 50 by then, was still farming. Mary, aged 47, reported that she had had ten children, but that only eight had survived to that census. There with their parents were Rilla, aged 16, Omer, aged 14, John, aged 13, Iva, aged 10, and Orange, aged 8. The nest emptied out in the decade following that census, as more of Simon and Mary's children married and started their own families. Daughter Iva married Victor E. Summe on 30 Mar 1907, daughter Rilla married Harold Vernon Weedling on 21 Sep 1908 (they later divorced), and son Omer married Rose Mattix on 25 May 1912, all three marriages taking place in Warsaw in Kosciusko County. By the 1910 Census, it was just Simon and Mary, living in Monroe in Kosciusko County. Simon, aged 60, had not yet retired from farming. Mary, aged 56, would have had some time to herself. By the 1920 Census, 70-year-old Simon was finally enjoying his well-deserved retirement. Mary, aged 67, was by his side. Two years after that census, Simon and Mary lost son Perry on 24 Jan 1912, four days before what would have been his 36th birthday, victim of organic heart disease according to his death certificate. On 12 Dec 1923, Simon and Mary celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. They spent fifty three years of their lives together before death separated them, claiming Simon on 11 Apr 1927, victim of stomach cancer. After Simon's death, Mary lived with daughter Rilla in Plymouth. She appeared on the 1930 Census, aged 77. The following year, Mary died on 21 May 1931.
