Bio

The Salt Lake Tribune June 28, 1995 page B5 Our loving father, Edson "Pat" Benson, died June 26, 1995 in Salt Lake City due to causes associated with Alzheimer's Disease. He was born March 10, 1906 in Logan, Utah to Joseph and Louise Benson, the seventh of eight children. He grew up in Southern Idaho and moved to Logan, Utah in his twenties, where he married Wyona Derricott, who died shortly thereafter of an acute heart condition. He joined the Army in 1939, taking his training in Oklahoma and California. He spent the last months of the war in Italy in the 1st Battallion of the 250th Coast Artillery and was transferred to serve the remainder of his tour in Alaska. After his discharge in 1945, he returned to Salt Lake City where he became the manager of the Ritz Billard Hall. He met Dorothy Kruse of LaPorte City, Iowa, whom he married in 1948. He is survived by his sister, Edith; and two sons, John and Guy; John's wife, Leita; and grandchildren, Adelaide and Patrick. He was a generous and loving husband, father, and friend, who loved fishing and the out-of-doors. He was an accomplished carpenter, gardener, and harmonica player who cherished the poems of Hawthorne, Longfellow, and Robert Service. But above all, he loved people, all of whom remember him for his kindness and humor. We will miss him very much. A graveside service is planned for Friday, June 30, at 10:30 a.m. at Mount Olivet Cemetery, 1342 East 500 South, SLC. Friends and family can gather afterward at the home of John Benson and Leita Kingsland. The family would prefer donations to the Alzheimer's Assoc. in lieu of flowers or gifts.
