Adams County man is drowned last night in pond near Berne An Adams Count resident, Jack Edward Robinette, Sr., 38, of Route 2, Berne, answering his son's call for help, drowned Wednesday evening in a pond located near Berne. The tragedy occurred at Mullin Pond, which is located on property owned by Rolandes Liechty. The pond is located one-quarter mile south of State Road 218 on County Road 000, (Tile Mill Road), just east of Berne. According to the Adams County Sheriff's Department, who investigated, the drowning took place at approximately 8:30 p.m. The drowning victim's son, Jack Edward Robinette, Jr., age 14, was fishing at the Mullin Pond, when the boy asked his father if he could go swimming. The father replied in the affirmative, and the boy swam along the edge for awhile and then got out of the pond. According to reports, the father asked the son if he wanted him to throw him back in the pond, the boy replied he didn't care, and the father playfully threw him in the water. The boy got about halfway across the pond when he became tired, and started to go under the water, and yelled for help. Robinette, pulled off his shoes, took out his billfold and jumped in the pond in an effort to aid his son. Robinette almost reached his son in the water, but then started to thrash about in the muddy water, and yelled for help. Roy Ratliff of Berne, fishing nearby, jumped into the water and pulled the Robinette boy ashore, and turned to go back for the lad's father, but Robinette had gone under the water. Ratliff walked out into the water to dive for Robinette, but the mud was so deep it almost pulled him under. The body was recovered in eight feet of water by the Berne Fire Department at 9:20 p.m. Robinette was a foreman at the Home Dairy, located just south of Berne. Adams County Coroner Richard Linn also investigated the accident. Funeral Saturday Robinette was born in Benhom, Ky., Feb. 13, 1932, a son of Samuel and Ella Treadway-Robinette, and had served with the U.S. Air Force in England.
