DIANA -- Services for Lavern Plummer, 85, of Diana, will be 2 p.m. Thursday, December 28, 2006, at Walnut Creek Baptist Church in Diana, with Dan Manuel and the Rev. Perry Crisp officiating. Interment will be in Walnut Creek Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Grubbs-Loyd Funeral Home in Diana. Mr. Plummer passed away Sunday, December 24, 2006, in Longview. He was born to Henry and Pearl Martin Plummer on February 1, 1921, in James (Diana). Mr. Plummer was retired from Texas Eastman after 31 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a medic for three years, one month and 15 days. During his service, he served in New Guinea, Japan, the Southern Philippines and Luzon, including the battle of Bloody Ridge. He received a Purple Heart, four Bronze Stars and a Silver Star. Mr. Plummer was a deacon for 37 years at Walnut Creek Baptist Church and had served as treasurer for 45 years. Lavern was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Pearl Plummer; sister, Elma Plummer Covin; and a nephew, Troy Gene Covin. He is survived by his wife of 57 years and 364 days, Nellie; daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Garry Ormes Sr.; grandchildren, Kandyce Ormes and Garry Ormes Jr.; brother, B.A. "Buford" Plummer; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, family, and beloved friends, including "the best neighbors in the world," Karl and Jackie Jenkins. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today, December 27, 2006, at Grubbs-Loyd Funeral Home in Diana. Published in the Longview News-Journal on 12/27/2006.
