Big Book "Record of Burials in Greenwood Cemetery, Grass Vallet 1867-1930, page 25" ... Mercedes R. Rashleigh died March 17, 1931, aged 25 years, 10 months, 2 days. - BIRTHDATE IS A CALCULATED ESTIMATE BASED ON AGE GIVEN AT TIME OF DEATH. -Deanna Mercedes Rashleigh I did some work on Mercedes’ genealogy. Randolph Alpers (1895-1926) was her first husband. He died at age 31 , they had three children; Avalon, Dalbert Randolph and Leona Alpers. She married Walton Rashleigh the next year after Randolph's passing. I use familysearch.org, and have it sorted out there. She also had a daughter named Mercedes Rashleigh, born 1928. (Contributor Maureen O. #48150625) (Following from Contributor Deanna) Mercedes LeDu is the daughter of Francis James "Frank" and Lillian (Gaus) LeDu. Marriage licenses were issued yesterday to Walter Julian Rashleigh and Mrs Mercedes Alpers, both of Grass Valley, and to Langely Barnes Dorris and Miss Ina Thore of Tyler. Rashleigh-Alpers Wedding On Sunday Mercedes LeDu Alpers and Walton Julian Rashleigh, both well known young people of Grass Valley, were quietly married at the Congregational Church early Sunday morning. Rev. E. O. Chapel, pastor of the church, was the officiating clergyman and Arnold LeDu and Sylvia Bishop acted as attendants. The couple will make their home in this city. Mrs. Rashleigh is well known in Grass Valley, where she has lived for a number of years. Mr. Rashleigh, who is a member of the city construction crew, is also very well known, and has a large number of friends. The Morning Union Grass Valley-Nevada City, Cal., Wednesday, March 18, 1931 Page 6 Mrs. W. Rashleigh, Mother of Week, Passed Last Night Mrs. Walton Rashleigh, young mother of an infant daughter, born one week ago at the Jones Memorial Hospital, passed away at the hospital last evening from complications following childbirth. It appeared that Mrs. Rashleigh was recovering in a splendid manner and no untoward developments appeared until Monday night, when she complained of pain and illness. An examination disclosed a ruptured tumor and although every precaution was taken and counter-remedies applied, the infection spread and brought her demise at 7:30 p.m. The mother of a week was well known in this city and kindly regarded by the residents of the Linden avenue section where she made her home. A grief-stricken husband and several small children appear unable to realize the departure of a wife and mother. Friends of the couple, unaware of the seriousness of her latest illness, were deeply shocked at the demise. The remains were taken in charge by the Holmes-Hooper Funeral Home and lie at the parlors on South Auburn street awaiting funeral arrangements by family members. The Morning Union Thursday March 19, 1931 Afternoon Funeral for Young Matron at Chapel Today Mrs. Mercedes LeDu Rashleigh, whose tragic death last Tuesday night was a complete shock to family members and friends, will be interred in the Greenwood cemetery this afternoon, following 2:30 o’clock services at the chapel of the Holmes-Hooper Funeral Home. The demise of the young woman, but 25 years 10 months old, leaves a family of four small children, the youngest but 8 days old. This child, born Caesarean, continues healthy and well. Mrs. Rashleigh died from an unknown tumor, which broke and poisoned her system. Neighbors of the family and towns-people have been extending their sympathy over the tragic occurrence. Walton Rashleigh, the husband, has been more or less incapacitated for the past year and a half because of a back injury, is just beginning to return to health. Deceased was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank LeDu and was a native of North Bloomfield. Most of her life was spent in this city, however, and she was quite well and favorably known here. In addition to the sorrow stricken husband and children, the deceased woman is survived by three brothers, Everett, Arnold and Wendel LeDu. Today’s services at the Holmes-Hooper Chapel will be in charge of Rev. E. O. Chapel of the Congregational Church. The Morning Union Friday March 20, 1931 Sad Funeral Thursday for Young Matron Scores of Grass Valley family members and friends of the late Mrs. Mercedes Rashleigh attended the sad services in her memory at the Holmes-Hooper Funeral Home chapel yesterday afternoon. The death of the mother of four small children struck a significant sympathetic chord in the community and expressions of regret were heard on all sides. Rev. E. O. Chapel of the Congregational Church delivered the eulogy at the chapel services. Interment was made at Greenwood cemetery with family members acting as pallbearers. Many floral offerings were delivered in tokens of esteem and friendship. (This child is Juanita Rashleigh, born March 11, 1931 in Grass Valley, CA.)
