Funeral service for Melvin Elmer Julian, 94, of Sterling, Oklahoma, will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 22, 2016, at the Sterling High School Auditorium with Pastor Matt Hester, officiating. Burial will follow at Sterling Cemetery under the direction of the Fletcher Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. The family will greet friends Thursday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Fletcher Funeral Home. Melvin passed away on Tuesday, September 20, 2016, in Duncan at the age of 94. Melvin Elmer Julian was born July 28, 1922 near Sterling, Oklahoma to Elmer and Mary Julian. He was raised on a farm near Sterling where he attended Burns School and then later Sterling High School. Melvin proudly received his Diploma from Sterling High School in 2002. Melvin served his country in the United States Army from January 11, 1943 until being honorably discharged on November 24, 1945. During his time in the Army, he served as an Auto Equipment Operator in England and Europe during World War II. He received the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, American Theater Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. Melvin married Pearlie Hale on June 3, 1946 in Sterling, Oklahoma. They were married for 70 years. He worked for civil service at Ft. Sill for 18 years and had a dairy farm for 26 years. He was a member of the Sterling United Methodist Church. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and going to ballgames. Melvin loved his community, church, and Sterling Schools. You could always find him and Pearlie at any function or event in town. Melvin was a wonderful man and will be missed by all those who knew him. He is survived by his wife Pearlie Julian of the home; 2 sons: Gary Julian and his wife Dana of Marlow and Leroy Julian and his wife Janet of Sterling; 1 granddaughter, Julie Julian of Marlow; 2 grandsons: Jared Julian and his wife Chelsea of Blanchard and Seth Julian of Sterling; 1 sister, Thelma Henderson of Sterling; and many loved relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents: Elmer and Mary Julian; 4 brothers: Bill, Gene, Leonard, and Delbert Julian; and 3 sisters: Mae Pendley, Rose Jones, and Wanda Baker. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Sterling United Methodist Church.
