Bio

John Bridge, 78, of 116 Bandy Ave. died Sunday at 2 a.m. in St. Mary's Hospital. Mr. Bridge, who was employed 40 years as a railway express clerk until his retirement in 1940, was born in Galesburg Nov. 17, 1873 and attended schools here. His marriage to Abbie. P. Brown took place in Galesburg January 17, 1942. His first wife, Dora, preceded him in death in July, 1940. A lifelong resident of Galesburg, Mr. Bridge was very active in the affairs of the Masonic Lodge. He was a member of Vesper Lodge 584, A.F. and A.M., having at one time served as master of his lodge. He was also a member of the Past Masters Club, the Peoria Consistory, and the Burlington Veterans Association. He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Mrs. David Svard of Galesburg; two step daughters, Mrs. Alta Maree Stevenson of Rock Island and Mrs. Lloyd Gibb of Biggsville, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in the Hinchliff and Wilson Funeral Chapel. Dr. Jual Ford, pastor of the First Methodist Church, will officiate and burial will be in Hope Cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel this evening. From the Galesburg Register-Mail, April 6, 1953. Funeral services for John R. Bridge, 78, of 116 Bandy Ave. who died Sunday, were held today at 2:30 p.m. in the Hinchliff and Wilson Funeral Chapel, with Dr. Jual R. Ford, pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiating. Thomas W. Williams offered vocal selections, accompanied by Mrs. Harry Neave, organist A. J. Heule of Vesper Lodge 584, as master conducted Masonic services, with Lambert Peterson serving as secretary. Burial was in Hope Cemetery. Pallbearers were Early Hawkins Sr., James W. Healey, Charles H. Tooth, Hugh Hendricks, M. K. Holloway, and LaVerne Epperson. Galesburg Register-Mail, April 7, 1953.
