Wanda Beth Dikes Coombes Wanda Coombes, 67, went home to the Lord on Saturday, June 16, 2007 in Austin, Texas. She was born October 4, 1939 in Wichita Falls, Texas. She tread great charity on this earth for 67 years. Wanda grew up in San Antonio, Dallas, and Dardanelle, Arkansas on the farm producing a life long love of gardening where she could name almost any plant see saw. Wanda graduated from Wichita Falls High School. She attended Texas Woman's University for several years, graduating from the University of Houston with a BS in Chemistry. Wanda married Robert Coombes. He obtained a PHD in Chemistry at the University of Houston. They moved to California where he produced medical procedure packets for hospitals. They enjoyed camping in the mountains and road trips. Wanda and Robert returned to Texas after he retired where she cared for the elderly in nursing homes. Wanda considered her patients as friends. She also cared for her mother-in law, Bertha Coombes here in Austin as well. Wanda faithfully attended Pond Springs Church of Christ. She felt a special calling for a group of elderly ladies at the church which she called "The Widows". Wanda is survived by her brother, James Dikes; sisters, Virginia Williams, Eupha Franklin, and Autavee Hartney; sister-in-law, Phyllis Coombes and brother-in-law, Zach Coombes. She is preceded in death by her parents, one sister and one brother. The family wants to thank numerous friends, neighbors, and health care professionals who helped Wanda not only during her journey, but also in her struggle to maintain her independence after her husband's death. The viewing will be held at Pond Springs Church of Christ from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 21, 2007 with services following the visitation. Burial will take place Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery in Pflugerville. Published in Austin American-Statesman on June 20, 2007
