Bio

Funeral at Shelby Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Tuesday August 30. Dubas Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Richard was born February 16, 1922 on the farm in Polk county, northwest of Shelby to Francis (Frank) Joseph and Augusta Cecilia (Kosch) Messing. He was the fourth of seven children. He attended country school District 14 all eight years until 1935. Prior to entering the Army Air Force on September 29, 1942 he worked at Swift Meat Plant in Omaha, attended Frye Aircraft School and worked at the Martin Bomber Plant also in Omaha. He became an airplane sheet metal worker in the 320th Air Service Squadron serving in Northern France. He attained the rank of Master Sargent before being discharged on January 6, 1946. Richard returned to the family farm northwest of Shelby where he and his brother Benedict cared for their aging parents, farmed and raised livestock together. He was a lifelong member of Shelby Sacred Heart Catholic Church where he served on the church board and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He also was a member of the Shelby American Legion Post #296 and the Farm Bureau. Richard liked to visit with his family at holiday get-togethers and was a fun uncle to young nieces and nephews. He enjoyed growing flowers and fruit trees, fishing and camping, and traveling with his brothers Benedict and Rev. Father Francis. Together they visited every state except Hawaii and all the provinces of Canada. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sister-in-law Sylvester L. and Caroline M. Messing, Clarence J. Messing, Benedict W. Messing, Rev. Father Francis A. Messing, sister and brother-in-law Agatha T. and David C. Sedam, sister-in-law Rosa B. Messing and nephew James R. Messing.
