Benedict Messing, age 88, of Shelby passed away Thursday April 3, 2014 at Osceola Good Samarian Society. Funeral services will be Monday April 7 at Shelby Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will be at the Shelby Catholic cemetery (Sacred Heart) with military rites by the Shelby Legion Post #296. Benedict was born April 12, 1925, on the farm in Polk County, northwest of Shelby, to Francis (Frank) Joseph and Augusta Cecelia (Kosch) Messing. He was the fifth of seven children. He attended Country School Dist. 14. He then served in the U.S. Army Infantry during World War II in Europe. He returned to farm northwest of Shelby, where he farmed and raised livestock with his brother, Richard, his entire life. He was a lifelong member of Shelby Sacred Heart Catholic Church where he served on the church board. He was also a member of the Shelby American Legion Post #296 and the Farm Bureau. Benedict liked to visit with his family at holiday get-togethers and was a fun uncle to his young nieces and nephews. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, and traveling with his brothers, Richard, and Rev. Father Francis. They visited every state except Hawaii and all the Provinces of Canada. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sister-in-law, Sylvester L. and Caroline M. Messing, Clarence J. Messing, Reverend Father Francis A. Messing; sister and brother-in-law, Agatha T. and David C. Sedam; and nephew, James R. Messing.
