Bio

Irvin Hunter Bonner, eighth child of Oliver Young Bonner and Sarah Hope Robinson, was born January 8, 1898 at Bonnerville, Texas. He was the third child of the family born on the eighth day of the new year and was named for his father's uncle, Irvin Hale Bonner, and his father's brother, Theophilus Hunter Bonner. He was known as Hunter (and nicknamed "Bant" by his family). Hunter and Mary Lucille Garrett were married at Fairfield, Texas on November 30, 1924.They had two children John Lee and Lillian Faye. Hunter studied Business Administration at Tyler Commercial College. He was a farmer, rancher and worked in the Freestone County Tax Collector's Office. Also, he managed Dr. Leslie Bonner's ranching work and worked for the Texas Telephone & Telegraph Co. In addition, Hunter was a rural mail carrier during the Depression years. In addition to delivering the mail, he brought groceries, etc. to the people and was paid with bartering and trade. He helped many people and made many friends. Hunter married Hunter and Mary were wonderful parents. Their children and grandchildren always knew that they had a safe haven at their home and that they would always be welcome. For many years they made their home on FM833 about a quarter mile from its intersection with US 75. They sold this property to Texas Utilities in the 1960s and moved to Fairfield where they bought a house from Joel and Clara at 446 West Main Street. They moved to Mesquite in 1980 to be near their children. Hunter died in Mesquite on July 28, 1985
