Thomas James was one of the ten children of William Vanderbilt Carter and Sarah Jane [Carmichael] Carter. His father was a prosperous farmer in Monroe County and Thomas became a farmer as well. On Aug 15 1883, when Thomas was 21, he married Braziliah KING. Braziliah was 18 years old. Together they had 3 children: Cordelia A Carter 1884 – 1904 Alvis M Carter 1886 – 1896 Sarah Jane Carter 1887 – 1888 In 1888 both Braziliah and Thomas' youngest daughter died. On Jul 16 1889 Thomas remarried. His second wife was Sarah Elizabeth Burch. She was 19 at the time of the marriage. Thomas was 27. They had eight children together: Ollie Ethel Carter 1891 – 1979 William Harley Carter 1893 – 1966 Lottie Opal Carter 1895 – 1896 Amos Asbury Carter 1896 – 1976 Minnie Emiline Carter 1898 – 1918 Roy Jennings Carter 1900 – 1971 Lucy Avada Carter 1902 – 1963 Two of the children died in the fall of 1896: Alvis and Lottie. Thomas died in Apr 1904 at the age of 41. (His oldest daughter Cordelia died the following month.) Thomas was given a Masonic Burial Service by the Stanford Mason's Lodge. His widow Sarah Elizabeth used the following verse to commemorate his death: A Happy Home we Once Enjoyed, How Sweet the Memory Still; But Death Has Left a Loneliness, The World can Never Fill.
