Robert "Bob" Cornell, Sr., 97, of Billings, passed away Wednesday afternoon, May 5, 2004, at St. Vincent Healthcare. Bob was born on Nov. 10, 1906, in Bay Shore, Long Island, N.Y., a son of Albert and Amelia (Smith) Cornell. In 1910, the family moved to a homestead on Blue Creek. On March 6, 1925, he married Mae Lance and they continued to ranch on Blue Creek until 1931, when Bob began construction work, helping build the Cooke City Highway. In 1941, Bob and his family moved to New Mexico and worked building air bases until 1943, when he and his son, Bob, Jr. both entered the military together to fight during WWII. Following his discharge from the Army in 1945, he continued a career in construction, retiring in 1972 from Billing Construction Company. Bob was a lifelong member of Masonic Ashlar Lodge 29, the Al Bedoo Shrine, the American Legion and the Elks Club. After 72 years of marriage, Bob's wife Mae passed away on June 2, 1997. He was also preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. Survivors include three daughters, son, two sons-in-law, 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren [survivor's names omitted]. Visitations will begin Saturday evening, May 8, at the Smith West Chapel. The funeral service will be at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, May 10, at the Smith West Chapel, 304 34th St. West, with military rites and interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
