Cherokee Daily Times: April 26, 1943 Mrs. Catherine Schissel, 79, pioneer Cherokee county resident, died at 2 a.m., Sunday at her home in Schisselville, six miles west and six miles south of Cherokee. She had been in poor health for some time. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Visitation church, Maryhill. Celebrant of Solemn Requiem High Mass will be her grandson, the Rev. Fr. John Schissel of Emmetsburg, Ia. Burial will be in Maryhill cemetery under direction of Schmidt Funeral home of Cherokee. The body was taken to Schmidt Funeral home Sunday where it will remain until 1 p.m., Tuesday when it wll be taken to the family home. Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the home. Survivors are two sons, Mathew and Joseph; three sisters, Mrs. Gertrude. Pitts, Cherokee; Mrs. Joe Zimmer, LeMars, and Mrs. L. Cota, Foley, Minn., and one brother, Will H. Schmitz, Cherokee. Also surviving are 24 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Mrs. Schissel was preceded in death by her husband and one daughter, Mary, a number of years ago. Mrs. Schissel lived on the farm where she died for 53 years. She was born October 15, 1863, at Fon Du Lac, Wis., and came here at an early age with parents. She was a member of Visitation church. She lived in Cherokee county for 68 years.
