Bio

Wanda Marie Smith passed from this life on July 11, 2016. She was born August 6, 1927 at White Deer, Texas to James B. and Thelma M. Mauldin. Wanda attended school in Coryell County and Coke County and graduated from Robert Lee High School in 1946. She attended San Angelo Junior College for two years in 1947 and 1948. She married Willis Wayne Smith on March 2, 1949. Two children were born to them, daughter, Robbie Jane and son, Stephen Wayne. Their marriage lasted sixty-eight years. Wanda was a member of the Robert Lee United Methodist Church and very active in her youth and as a young adult. Throughout her life she was actively involved in her community with participation in the Robert Lee Garden Club, 4-H Club, Cub Scouts, Study Club, Robert Lee High School Band Boosters and PTA and the Coke County Historical Committee. Wanda was very proud of her work with fellow co-author Bonita Copeland to catalog all the existing cemetery gravesites and epitaphs in Coke County which resulted in publishing a book on this subject. The book is still in use and has had numerous printings. Wanda was very creative and throughout her life, produced many beautiful original needlepoint projects which grace her home and the homes of family and friends. She was a seamstress, an artist, a crafter, a writer and a collector. She retired from public life in January, 1996 after a debilitating stroke which ended many of her beloved activities. Perhaps the greatest joys of her life were her grandchildren. Many hours were spent in exploring, crafting, slumber parties and games. They continued to be a large part of her life, after her stroke, by sitting and talking with her about her interests and politics. She is survived by her husband, Willis Wayne Smith; daughter, Robbie J. Beal and husband Lynn; son, Stephen W. Smith; four grandchildren, Bethany Miller and husband, Brian, Amanda Rung and husband, Brian, Ashley Monroe and husband, Bronc and Colin Beal and wife Julie; a granddaughter of the heart, Brandi White and husband Cody; great grandchildren are Charles Miller, Caroline Beal and Lynlee White; sister, Betty Lammers; brother, Don Mauldin and wife Melba; sister-in-law, Lynn Doris Smith. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, mother-in-law and father-in-law, one sister and one brother, and one brother-in-law. Family visitation will be held Thursday, July 14, 2016 at the funeral home with family present from 5 to 7pm. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, July 15, 2016 at Robert Lee Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home. In Lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to your favorite charity.
