Known mostly as W. F. or Samp, he was the son of Robert Orr and Amelia Dunn and is in the 1850 Polk census as a *13 year old. He had an older sister, Rachel E. J., and younger siblings, Hiram Jack, Sion E., Robert R., James K. P. and Elijah, and by 1860 another sister, Sarah. Samp married Sarah Evans and by 1870 they were parents of Mary J., Daniel, Emma, Alice, Florence, and William, with Essie, Tine and Rene, born later. Two of Samp's brothers, Hiram and Sion, were hung as Confederate 'deserters' by Bill Harbison and his gang in August 1863 during the Civil War. Oral family history says they were only absentees who came home to help with the crops so the family wouldn't starve. A keeper of a diary in Polk County noted on December 9, 1914 "I learned today that old Sam Orr, was dead. He was about 80 years old, the oldest son of Robert and Em Orr." Other oral history says that although Samp was born and lived in Benton, he died down in Georgia, but no death record nor burial place has been found. If accurate dates and places are found we will move this virtual memorial to that site. * Note: In the 1900 Polk County, TN census, Samp gives his birth date as October 1833 and that he has been married 40 years with 9 children, 8 living.
