GILMER - Gladys W. Carroll, 98 of Mesquite, Texas, formerly of Gilmer, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, February 20, 2011. She was born September 26, 1912, in Upshur County, to Oscar and Leaner Moore Williford. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Duran Williford and Edward Williford,; and sister, Alice Ruth Smith. Gladys graduated from Gilmer High School in 1931 and, at the age of seventeen, became a clerk for the federal Farmers Home Administration. She retired after forty years of service, having received numerous awards for her outstanding performance. On November 27, 1941, she married the love of her life, Donald Gilbert Carroll. They recently celebrated 69 years of marriage. One of her greatest pleasures after retirement was to spend vacation time in Arkansas with Gib. Gladys was a dedicated member of the Gilmer Church of Christ, having been a member for seventy years. She taught Sunday school classes, was given to hospitality and supported her husband as a dedicated elder's wife. She was currently a member of the Mesquite Church of Christ. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Carol Ann Pate and husband Bill of Mesquite; grandson, Scott Ferguson and wife Amy of Sunnyvale, Texas; granddaughter, Leia Paxton of Forney, Texas; stepgrandsons, Eddy Pate and wife Pam of Rockwall, Texas, Steve Pate and wife June of Sunnyvale, Texas, and James Pate and wife Jennifer of Mesquite, Texas. She had seven wonderful great-grandchildren, Cameron and Brendon Ferguson, Alex Paxton, Paige and Rachel Pate, and April and Max Pate. She is survived by three sisters-in-law, Loyce Williford, Monta Williford and Nadine Carroll; and many special and loving nieces and nephews. Services will be at 11 a.m. today, February 23, 2011, at Croley Funeral Home in Gilmer, Texas. Visitation was from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, February 22, 2011, at Croley Funeral Home.
