Bio

GILMER — Funeral services for Donald Gilbert "Gib" Carroll, 99, of Mesquite, Texas, formerly of Gilmer, went to be with his Lord on April 4, 2012. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 7, 2012, at Croley Funeral Home in Gilmer. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park in Gilmer. Arrangements are under the direction of Croley Funeral Home in Gilmer. He joined his beloved wife, Gladys, who preceded him in death February 20, 2011. He was born January 27, 1913, in the Latch community, to Stephen Hope and Lou Burcham Carroll. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Hattie Langford, Bessie Pool and Lillian Thompson; and three brothers, Lewis Carroll, Kermit Carroll and Glen Carroll. Gib attended school in Latch, Little Mound and Big Sandy. He farmed in the Little Mound community until age 29, when he moved to Gilmer and married Gladys Williford on November 27, 1941. He was a clerk at Hudgins Department Store before becoming part owner of Carroll Bros., a wood products plant that serviced 10 states for 17 years. In addition to working together, the Carroll brothers also sang together and were well known in the community for their ability to entertain. Gib loved his Lord and his family. He was a dedicated member of Gilmer Church of Christ, having served as an elder for 10 years. He was a Bible class teacher, took part in mission trips and served where needed. He also used his musical talent to sing for many funerals throughout the Gilmer area. He was currently a member of Mesquite Church of Christ. Gib also had a talent for writing poems and songs. Two sacred songs, "There Will Be Peace" and "He Gave Me His Love," were published in 1983. His ability to create jokes was enjoyed by his friends, and he always had one ready for their enjoyment. He kept busy during his retirement years by fishing, traveling and making clocks from China plates. On January 26, 2010, one day before his 97th birthday, he was inducted into the Sons of the American Revolution, an achievement for which he was most proud. He is survived by his daughter, Carol Ann Pate and husband, Bill, of Mesquite; grandson, Scott Ferguson and wife, Amy, of Sunnyvale, Texas; granddaughter, Leia Paxton of Forney, Texas; stepgrandsons, Eddy Pate and wife, Pam, of Rockwall, Texas, Steve Pate and wife, June, of Sunnyvale, Texas, and James Pate and wife, Jennifer, of Mesquite, Texas. He has seven wonderful great-grandchildren, Cameron and Brendon Ferguson, Alex Paxton, Paige and Rachel Pate and April and Max Pate. He is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Loyce Williford, Monta Williford and Nadine Carroll; and many special and loving nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today, April 6, 2012, at Croley Funeral Home in Gilmer. Memorials may be made to Gilmer Church of Christ, P.O. Box 487, Gilmer, TX 75644; Mesquite Church of Christ Missions Fund, 400 West Davis, Mesquite, TX 75149; or Hospice Plus, 3700 McKinnon, Suite 200, Dallas, TX 75201.
