Bio

Susan Helen Sohler, age 106, of Evansville, Indiana passed away on June 13, 2016 at Parkview Care Center. Susan was born February 10, 1910 to Pauline (Denner) and William Sohler on a farm near Belden, Nebraska. Graveside services will be on Monday, June 20, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Michael's Cemetery in Coleridge, Nebraska with the Rev. David Liewer officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Coleridge American Legion Post #114. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home of Coleridge. She graduated from Wayne State College, Nebraska where she was also a member of the basketball team. After graduating, she taught school and later was the first woman employed at the Seattle, Washington weather station. During WWII, she served in the United States Navy as a member of the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES) stationed in Ottumwa, Iowa. After the war she was employed as an accountant for the state of California. Susan then cared for her brother Jerry for 35 years in Belden and Hartington, Nebraska. In 2002 she moved to Evansville, Indiana to the home of Matt and Pauline Bartek, her niece, until becoming a resident of Parkview Care Center in 2006 where she enjoyed many friendships with staff and residents. Susan was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church and Seniors Group and a past member of the California and Hartington Nebraska American Legions and Hartington Nebraska Historical Society. She is survived by nieces and nephews: Shirley Mendenhall and Rita (Carl) Carlson of Omaha, Nebraska; JoAnn (Delbert) Birkel of Bonesteel, South Dakota; Patrick Curran of Albion, Nebraska; Fr. Bill Curran of Savelugu, Ghana; Mary Ellen (Dean) Diederich of Greenleaf, Kansas; John (Chris) Curran of Carmel, Indiana; and Pauline (Matt) Bartek of Evansville, Indiana. Susan is also survived by 40 great nieces and nephews; 122 great great nieces and nephews; and 24 great great great nieces and nephews. Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Pauline and William Sohler; brothers Edward (Donna) and Gerald; sisters Cecelia, Julia, Ellen (John) Curran, and Clara (Tom) Lydon; niece Barbara Sohler (Tom) Murphy, and a great nephew Brian Diederich. - Wintz & Ray Funeral Home
