Bio

Rites held Saturday for Viola Nelson, 75 Viola Nelson, longtime newspaperwoman and Dimmitt resident since 1943, died at 1:30 a.m. last Thursday in Plains Memorial Hospital of complications following a stroke. She was 75. Funeral services were held Saturday morning in the First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Howard Quiett, pastor, and Rev. Marvin Roark, former pastor here, officiating. Burial was in Castro Memorial Gardens, directed by Dennis Funeral Home. Active pallbearers were Bob Anthony, Fred Bruegel Jr., Jim Cleavinger, Dale Maxwell, Jack Miller and Joe Nelson. Born Sept. 12, 1903, at Jones Prairie in Milam County, she was the daughter of Julius Henry and Mary Caroline Patzke. She was raised in a family of nine children on a farm near Rosebud, in Falls County. She was married March 16, 1929, to Bascom M. Nelson at Buckholts. After living at Rogers, Paducah and Matador, she and her husband established the Roaring Springs Reporter and the Amherst Reporter, then operated the Olton Enterprise before moving to Dimmitt in 1943 to lease and purchase the Castro County News. She was active in the family newspaper business until 12 years ago. An accomplished artist, Mrs Nelson created more than 100 oil paintings and other works of art during the past 20 years, including special paintings for the county's Diamond Jubilee celebration in 1966. She and her husband celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last East Sunday at the First United Methodist Church. She was active through the years in the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Dimmitt Garden Club, Chamber of Commerce and Castro County Democratic Women. She was an alternate delegate to several state Democratic conventions. She is survived by her husband, B.M.; two sons, Bascom Jr. of Beeville and Don of Dimmitt; a daughter, Mary Burnham of Albuquerque; three sisters, Selma Good and Essie Maxwell of Lott and Pauline Armstrong of Washington; and seven grandchildren.
