Bio

Albert K. Austin, age 86, was born on May 23, 1920 at Wilson, ID to Herbert W. and Mary Gladys Austin, and grew up in the Reynolds Creek area of the Owyhee Mountain range. "Al" enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and proudly served his country from 1941 to 1945. Albert participated in action at Vella LaVelle, Empress Augusta Bay, Bougainville, Guam, Marianas Islands and was wounded at Iwo Jima, for which he received the Purple Heart. While stationed at San Diego, CA, he met Emily Gembala and after he was discharged from the military they married and made their home in Nampa, ID. They later divorced, but from their marriage a daughter, Charlene, and a son, Alan, were born. Albert worked as a heavy equipment operator and diesel mechanic and traveled throughout the world working on different projects. He later moved to the Bend and Redmond, OR area where he lived for over 30 years. Albert loved to hunt and fish and was a proud member of the National Rifle Association for many years. He knew no strangers and could start up a conversation with anyone. In March 2006 he moved back to Idaho to live at Plantation Place until his death on Sept. 30, 2006. His father and mother and older brother Leslie Austin preceded him in death. He is survived by his son Alan Austin and spouse Gaylene of Nampa, ID; daughter Charlene Fobes and spouse Rick of Boise, ID; sister Catherine Krause of Goldendale, WA; five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his "kids," Butch, his dog, Teddy, his cat and Sweet Pea, his mule. He leaves many friends at Plantation Place, especially three special ones, Albert, Harry and Don. Graveside services are at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery on Oct. 6, 2006, with military honors. BOISE IDAHO STATESMAN, 04/Oct/2006
