George H. Black was born in Jackson Co., Ga., the son of Absolom H. Black (about 1810-1870) and Virginia Hayes (born about 1817.) He married Olivia F. Seymore (about 1850-1921) in 1867. He enlisted in Co. G, 16th Georgia Infantry July 20, 1861. The 16th GA Infantry Regiment (also called Sallie Twiggs Regiment) was organized during the summer of 1861. The ten companies were raised in the counties of Columbia, Elbert, Gwinnett, Habersham, Hart, Jackson, Madison, and Walton (although there were members from other counties). Company G was organized at Jackson County GA under Capt A C Thomas. Tom Black, George's brother, also served in Co G, as well as Dave Lyle and John D. Catlett all of whom later moved to Upshur County as well. Children of George H Black and Olivia F Seymore Black included William Raye Black (about 1868-1952), John Luther Black (about 1873-1953), Maggie Black (about 1878-1960), and James Murphy Black (about 1887-1955).
