John Franklin Wallace's father, William LaFayette Wallace married Ann L. Roberds in Rutherford County, NC on 27 Dec 1865. I have been unable to locate death information on her. It is believed that she is John Franklin's mother, as his father married Angeline Rainey on 6 Nov 1876. Stories told among the family through the years was that John Franklin's mother was an Indian woman who worked for William LaFayette Wallace, and his wife agreed to raise John Franklin as her own. However, I am unable to find an 1870 census that shows John Franklin was living with William LaFayette and Ann Wallace. There is a census in North Carolina for a W L Wallace and Ann Wallace but no child. I can not verify if that was William LaFayette Wallace or not, but it does match the area where he lived prior to that time.
