Dr. John W. Cartwright, the third son of Mr. and Mrs. Lemuel Cartwright, was one of the best known and most influential Wise County citizens. He came to Smith County, Texas, in 1846, and to Wise County in 1854. In 1864 he served under Major Quaile, Captain Pickett's company for defense of Wise County against Indians. At close of the Civil War, he entered school in Jacksonville, Texas, Returning to Wise County in 1867, where he taught a session of school at Sand Hill. Dr. Cartwright returned to school at Alvarado in 1868, and, later, at Mansfield. He began studying medicine in 1869 under Dr. A. K. Middleton, at Johnson's Station and entered Medical College, Louisville, KY, in 1870. Dr. Cartwright returned to Texas in 1875 and married Miss Allie Stephens, of Fort Worth. Dr. and Mrs. Cartwright relocated in Illinois, until 1877, when they returned to Decatur to live. Ten years later, Dr. Cartwright moved to within a few miles of Amarillo. His practice extended in every direction more than hundred miles. Dr. Cartwright retired from the practice of medicine and moved to Amarillo. His ranch lands on which he first located increased in value and augmented his means quite considerably. Seven of the nine children born to Dr. and Mrs. Cartwright were living in 1907: 1. Charles Lemuel, with wife and three children, lived at Dalhart, for three years, a Methodist minister; 2. Myrtle, married David A. Park, of Canyon City, Texas; 3. Ernest Armond Cartwright, 4. Trua Sara 5. Johnnie Stephens, and two little boys, Hubert and Rolla, are at home. ------------------------- Dr. J.W. Cartwright died january 17, 1911 of pneumonia at 1816 Polk.
