Bio

2/21/1991 News article from the Omaha World-Herald: Children Lose Second Parent To Lung Cancer Nancy Morrow, 51, of 9607 Ohio St., died of lung cancer Wednesday, three years after the same disease killed her husband, David. Relatives and friends have set up a trust fund and are seeking donations to help care for and educate the couple's five children, ranging in age from 9 to 20. "They have been a hard - working family all their lives," said Sharon Skarda, Mrs. Morrow's sister. "With all the medical bills, there is nothing left." The Rev. Patrick McCaslin of St. Leo Catholic Church said he had known David Morrow since boyhood. "David and Nancy were very involved in the church," he said. "All of their children have gone to school here. Both of them fought hard to the end, not in terms of denial or not accepting the disease. They both had a strong will to live because of the kids." Mrs. Morrow had no insurance, her sister said. Morrow's death benefits have been held up in a legal dispute with a former employer, McCaslin said. In addition, the Morrows' three eldest children, Jennifer, 20; Sarah, 16; and Frederick, 14; suffer from asthma and require medication, Mrs. Skarda said. Mrs. Morrow was diagnosed with cancer 14 months ago, her sister said. She was told in December that further chemotherapy would be useless. Mrs. Skarda said she had arranged through travel agencies, hotels and resorts to send her sister and the children to Florida for a Christmas vacation. "They got a free trip so they would have a family vacation to remember," Mrs. Skarda said. Even though her chemotherapy treatments had ended, Mrs. Morrow insisted on taking that vacation. "She was only sick one day that week," Mrs. Skarda said. "It was sheer determination on her part to have that vacation with her children." Mrs. Skarda said Jennifer is a junior at Creighton University. Sarah attends Marian High School. Frederick, 11 - year - old Timothy, and Molly, 9, are pupils at St. Pius X/St. Leo Grade School. Although Mrs. Skarda and her husband, of Creston, Iowa, are the children's legal guardians now, Mrs. Skarda said the children will remain in the care of their maternal grandmother, Helen Rozanek of Columbus, Neb., through the school year. Mrs. Rozanek has been caring for the children at their Omaha home, Mrs. Skarda said. "We're going to figure out some continuity for the children," Mrs. Skarda said. "We don't know yet how that is going to work out." McCaslin, who helped set up the trust fund, said the children have much to deal with. "They have been battling the effects of this disease for three years now," he said. "Now they have to battle the effects of losing both parents." Contributions to the Morrow Children Trust Fund may be made at the American National Bank, 90th Street and West Dodge Road. Funeral services for Mrs. Morrow will be at St. Leo at 10 a.m. Friday. The rosary will be said at 7 tonight at John A. Gentleman Westside Chapel.
