Bio

Melvin A. Wennekamp, 88, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Sunday, May 15, 2016, at the Columbus Community Hospital. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 19 at 10:30 AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. Patrick Sparling officiating. Interment will be in the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Columbus. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue on Thursday from 9:30 AM until service time at the church. There will be a family prayer service on Thursday at 10:15 AM at the church. Memorials are suggested to Lutheran Missions. Melvin A Wennekamp was born August 19, 1927 in Creston, Nebraska, to George and Marie (Groteluschen) Wennekamp. He attended Immanuel Lutheran Grade School and graduated from Kramer High School in Columbus in 1945. Melvin entered the United States Army on July 26, 1951, and was honorably discharged on June 12, 1953. On April 9, 1994, Melvin was united in marriage to Margaret (Wergin) Hughes. He was a farmer and livestock feeder. Melvin was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where he had served on the church council and was an usher. Melvin is survived by: Wife – Margaret Wennekamp of Columbus, NE Step-Son – Roger Hughes of Columbus, NE Step-Grandson – Jason Hughes of Lincoln, NE Several nieces and nephews Melvin was preceded in death by: Parents – George and Marie Wennekamp Step-Daughter – Linda Hughes Sisters – Pauline Wennekamp and Elsie Wendt Brothers – Reinhold, Herman, Arthur, Irwin, Martin, Albert, and Clemens Wennekamp
